Hoof & Sole Artisan Poultice Success Story

"I love the BioStar poultice because my horse Victorio has very sensitive legs. I haven't had much luck with other poultices, they've been more irritating than helpful. What I find great about the BioStar poultices is that everything is hand-mixed, all the ingredients are things I can trace back to their roots and has no chemicals. You get a really great result with the poultice - a nice tight leg and no irritation."                                                  - Abigail McArdle

Artisan Poultices:

Our poultices are made by hand in the time honored art of poultice preparation, without the use of stainless steel instruments (utensils, mixers, bowls) to ensure high conductivity of the clays. The unique concentration of clays and essential oils are designed for a thin layer application. Although a heavy or thick application can be applied, it is not necessary. Using a thin layer will produce superior results.

• Hoof & Sole combines kaolin, bentonite, Moroccan and sea clays for their absorbing and adsorbing properties.

• Plantain powder is well known throughout the world for its support of a healthy inflammatory response.

• Pau d' arco bark has been used as a poultice for thousands of years because of its action on thrush, fungus, and bruises.

• Calendula oil is a time-honored oil that restrains the inflammatory response. Arnica extract has been used for hundreds of years for bruises and strains.

• Tea tree oil contains disinfecting and soothing properties, and frankincense and myrrh carry aromatherapy benefits as well as inflammation reduction.

• Dead sea salts and epsom salts have high magnesium content.

• Organic apple cider vinegar has been used historically to mitigate the inflammatory response.

Hoof and soul

With the wet summer and fall we have had my thrush prone horse was having issues. We had a constant battle and tried everything from clay to the ‘purple stuff’ to the ‘green stuff’. We were not getting worse but also not quite recovering. Thus clay is the best I have tried so far. It stays in place helps combat fungus while keeping out the mucky mud of the pasture. I have also used it on the rest of my crew as a preventative. It stays in for several days and all are doing well.

Effective hoof therapy

I purchased a dry pint size of Hoof & Sole Artisan Poultice for my mare. I mix enough of the powder for four hooves with organic apple cider vinegar for use as a hoof packing during muddy seasons and following hoof trimming. After thoroughly cleaning the hooves I pack the "good mud" into the clefts of the frog and all other crevices. The goal is to prevent thrush and help with soreness after a trim or if the hooves get too soft. Last week I packed her hooves after a trim, while the ground was still muddy and icy after 24 inches of snow melted. Some of the poultice was still in the clefts of the frogs one week later! I have been picking out the hooves daily without going all the way down-just to remove ice and mud clumps and to leave the poultice where it can do some good. I can still smell the poultice after a week. I found one small area in a frog cleft near the heel that had some thrush. This is a big improvement over just twice daily hoof cleaning. My horse has free access to a matted/bedded box stall, paddock and turnout with sand and decomposed granite, which normally does not get very muddy, but it's a wet month (February 2019). I was not expecting the poultice to stay in place for more than a day or two under these conditions. The formula appears to be quite effective!
